including some along the garden state parkway. yesterday president obama joined governor chris christie on the ground in atlantic city for an up-close look at the destruction where the storm came ashore. they also saw the damage by air. boarding the president's marine one helicopter for aerial views of the hardest-ity communities. the governor thanked the president for pledging quick federal relief to the region. it's something president obama insists will not be delayed. >> what i can promise you is that the federal government will be working as closely as possible with the state and local officials, and we will not quit until this is done. we are not going to tolerate red tape. we're not going to tolerate bureaucracy. and i've instituted a 15-minute rule essentially on my team, you return everybody's phone calls in 15 minutes. whether it's the mayors, the governors, county officials. if they need something, we figure out a way to say yes. >> and the president of the united states and i have now had six conversations since sunday. that shows to me a level of caring and concern and inte

, republican governor chris christie. just six days out from the election. interesting for many reasons and mostly because chris christie is a top romney surrogate and highly critical of the president in the past but since the storm lavished praise on the president's handling of the storm's wrath. before heading to the jersey shore, the president's made an unscheduled stop at fema headquarters. this is the president meeting with several administration and cabinet persons there. we're told he addressed everyone around the table thanking them for the work and warning that the country's not out of the woods yet. joining us now nbc news political director chuck todd on the phone and ron allen live in point please sant beach, new jersey. todd, i'll start with you. we have chris christie with president obama and others say what else was supposed to happen here? i mean, these men may be from different sides of aisle but we know they're still without power and lost their homes and the other issue still facing the region. >> that's right. we are here in atlantic city. he is up in the chopper wit

is heading to new jersey. he'll join governor chris christie to see the devastation on the ground himself. meanwhile, governor romney, he's back on the trail in florida. there's still just six days until the election. what does that tell us about where the campaign stakes are really in play this morning. good morning from washington. it's wednesday, october 31st, 2012. happy halloween. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. let's get right to may first reads of the morning. we're still a long way from recovery. today after hurricane sandy's devastation we're seeing the very first signs of a return to what may be some normalcy as millions attempt to put the pieces back together. this hour new york city mayor michael bloomberg will ring the opening bell at the new york stock exchange which plans to be fully operational despite blackouts and flooding in lower manhattan. two of the area's major airports, jfk and newark in new jersey have opened with some limited service this morning. but new york's laguardia airport remains closed after major flooding. overall, nearly 19,000 flights can

in many ways of governor christie in new jersey, sort of metaphorically putting his arm around the president, telling him what a great president he was. last thing you would have expected say two weeks ago. what did you make of that? >> i thought it was a fair appraisal. look, governor christie and new jersey has a real problem. jersey shore devastated, plus all the electric outages and problems throughout a large part of the state. of course governor christie needs help. this is what happens when governors need help, they come to washington. and americans expect washington to help. there is a role for the commander in chief, for the president of the united states, when disaster strikes at home. that's what americans expect of their leader. >> were you pleased that the marathon was canceled? >> yeah. i think it was a smart move. i do. it's been -- new yorkers have been really terrific about this. people downtown in manhattan have been four days without light or power. the streets are dark. it's like sarajevo during the siege in the balkans and the thought of more people coming

that way for up for five days. across new jersey, the governor christie says four shore times are devastated. >> houses are moved off of the foundation, houses are in the middle of route 35. the amusement pier at seaside park half washed out. the roller coaster is now in the ocean. the level of devastation is unthinkable. >>neil: unthinkable and for now irreparable and it is not over yet. rick? rick: the damage to point pleasant beach are stunning and sad. this town was not the worst hit by far. the boardwalk in some sections is completely destroyed and this ocean front hotel, the white sands half a million in damages. the deck is torn up. the restaurant is trashed. fences have come down. believe it or not, this is the swimming pool. it is filled with sand that came off the beach that made up the dunes they thought protected the homes, wiped out and pushed this way. you can see more damages here. the sand in the street is on ocean avenue and if you look down along the coast, you will see maybe a rescue helicopter and, also, homes that suffered significant damage, the gray hous

and down the jersey shore with the jersey governor chris christie. republic and democrat working together. we'll have more on that in a minute. as you know this storm affected tens of millions of people up and down the east coast, as far as inland as chicago. the hardest hit states by far, new jersey and then new york. this is new video of an nypd helicopter crew rescuing stranded people off the roof of a house in staten island. the home surrounded by some pretty deep water. and, remember these pictures of the firestorm. breezy point section of queens. they are really stunning. it burned out of control for hours on the night of the storm. we'll take a look at these new and staggering aerials of the aftermath. about 100 homes in the middle class community burned to the ground. witnesses say it looks like a world war ii bomb attack aftermath. today, new york's governor and drew cuomo says the state is doing everything it can to help. >> i can assure you everyone is doing everything they can. they are all working very, very hard. but these are significant challenges that we're facing. and pr

it cannot be. governor christie postponed it. it will be moved to monday, november 5th to protect new jersey's young trick or treaters. crews were fixes falling power lines. nearly two million households in new jersey are still without electricity today. in reference of how much of the country that means, even if there was one person in each household without pour, even if it was just one, it would mean there are more people in day three of no power in just new jersey than the population of each of these states marked on the map. this is a huge number of americans here. it's nots over, it's not done, it's not past tense. widespread flooding is still present. we talked about hoboken last night. it's directly across the hudson river. it's small but has 50,000 people in it. as of last night, the mayor told through was as much as 20,000 people still stranded in deep, impassable, and increasingly polluted flood waters. the national guard did get to some of those people. we'll have more about that dramatic situation in just a moment. the national guard also arrived in swamped towns. a difficult ti

chris christie who toured the destruction with president obama said some parts of the shore may never look the same again. >> the death toll reached 124 people with 56 in the united states. at least 28 in new york. and close to 5 million customers are still waiting for the power to come back on. >> cnn has the entire disaster zone covered this morning. our correspondents spanned out across lower manhattan and all up and down the jersey shore. >> first, the economic capital of our country is slowly getting back to normal this morning even while facing extreme damage. power outages and people having to walk for hours just to get to work. meantime, another hospital lost generator power in lower manhattan. right now hundreds of people are being pushed out of bellevue after hundreds of others were evacuated yesterday. our dr. sanjay gupta is live at bellevue but first to rob marciano. the governor says there will be no fares for subways, trains and buses but many of the bus and subway lines are still not up and running yet so how limited is transportation now? >> well, i can tell you from

. bulldozers and national guard removing heavy debris from the streets. chris christie has said new jersey's 83-mile shoreline remains the most damaged that he's ever seen anywhere. one of the hardest hit areas to the north of us, point pleasant beach. let's send it up to ron allen who has the latest from there. ron. >> reporter: what was the patio of a restaurant here along the beach front, i think i'm standing on what's left of the roof right now. this is an example of the kind of damage you see up and down the jersey shore. if you pan inside here, you see that it is completely destroyed. the waters and sand came racing up here, the sand inside is about two or three feet deep. the irony of all this, if you look way inside there, there are some things on the shelf there, some napkins and ketchup bottles and cups that were undisturbed. but this area is a complete loss. coming back this way, this is an area that was supposed to be protected. out here along the ocean, there was a high sand dune just beyond the fence that used to be tlchl the sand dune was about 12 feet high, 30 yards long and tha
